Diversity Under Focus Across New York’s Elite Public High Schools

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – This year’s acceptance letters for New York City’s elite public high schools are raising the pressure on officials to confront the challenges of diversity and integration.

At Stuyvesant High School, only seven of 895 slots for the incoming freshman class were offered to black students, a rate down from 10 last year.

Bronx High School of Science made 12 offers to black students this year, down from 25 in 2018.

The low numbers come despite Mayor Bill de Blasio’s pledge to increase diversity at the schools.

He has proposed scrapping the entrance exams and overhauling the admission process.
