Man Falls 12-15 Feet After Sidewalk Collapses In The Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There was a freak accident in the Bronx on Saturday when a man fell into a hole after witnesses say the sidewalk suddenly gave way.
The FDNY says the fall happened around 12:30 p.m. in front of 4521 3rd Avenue in the Belmont section.
The Department of Buildings says preliminary findings show the collapse was caused by a sidewalk vault in a state of disrepair.
Witnesses told CBS2’s Kiran Dhillon the man fell after the vault collapsed when the man stepped on it.

Officials say the 33-year-old man fell 12 to 15 feet. Firefighters worked for about 30 minutes to rescue him.
Crews eventually went into a side entrance of the building to access the cellar to rescue the victim.
Police say he was taken across the street to St. Barnabas Hospital. He suffered minor head injuries and is in stable condition.
As a result of the incident, the DOB says the entire five-story building has now been vacated.
Meanwhile, people who work in the building say several streets in the area are in a similar state of disrepair. They’re now worried for their safety.
“You never really think about it when you’re walking around, there’s just holes around the streets,” said Aliaortha Vega, who works next door.
“There’s a lot of kids that pass through here, a lot of kids. It’s obviously in front of a hospital. There’s people that transit with wheelchairs,” a deli worker said.
The hole in the sidewalk has since been covered, and the investigation is ongoing.
